In case you've been out of the loop over the last ten or so years, you've probably heard about or known a few fellas who grow out their facial hair for the month of November. Many post their cold weather inspired 'dos with the hashtag #NoShaveNovember or other similar tags. But where did this trend come from? This month, The Price Opinion will highlight the Movember Foundation story as well as raise money to benefit prostate cancer research through the foundation with the help of local Summit, New Jersey businesses. The Movember Foundation got its roots (no pun intended...ok, maybe a little) with two friends catching up over beers in Melbourne, Australia in 2003. Pondering why the once common moustache seemingly disappeared from men's fashion, they brainstormed ways of bringing it back. To gain a following, they knew they had to link it to a good cause. They decided to help draw attention to and raise money for men's health issues, specifically prostate cancer and mental health. The founders, Travis and Luke, initially started by reaching out to guys they knew via email. Twenty-eight friends and family members later and the original 30 "Mo Bros" were born.

Deciding that men's health was a cause near and dear to them all, they decided to get serious and organize. Various "Bros" took on different jobs, reaching out to local men's health charities (prostate cancer was their focus), creating a logo, registering a website and a foundation name. Fast forward to 2005 and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia became the first official men's health partner of the Movember Foundation. That year, according to the Foundation, "9,315 Mo Bros raised AUD 1.2 million for the PFCA", the largest donation from a single donor they had ever received.

In 2006, they became an official charity and went from a nights and weekends organization to a full-time, registered charity. These guys were really making a difference for raising money and awareness for men's health issues in Australia. Their official tagline: "Changing the face of men's health".
