Coming This Summer To The Summit Playhouse!

By: Mary

Tove Jansson said, “A theatre is the most important sort of house in the world…” The residents of Summit, New Jersey feel that way about their beloved Playhouse.  The Summit Playhouse, which was founded in 1918,  is New Jersey’s oldest continuously running community theatre and one of the oldest continuously operating amatuer community theaters in the United States.  It’s season consists of three main stage plays, several youth productions, theatrical workshops and community collaborations. Each production benefits a local outreach, and each year a theater arts award is presented to two high school seniors.  The Summit Playhouse home was built in 1891 and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings.

The next youth production at The Summit Playhouse will be:

  • July 6-7, 13-14 at 7:00 pm
  • July 7-8, 14-15 at 2:00 pm

Music by Robert Reale and Lyrics by Willie Reale

Based on the books by Arnold Lobel

“Based on Arnold Lobel's well-loved books, and a Broadway hit with three Tony Award nominations, this whimsical musical follows two great friends – the cheerful Frog and the rather grumpy Toad – and their forest friends through four fun-filled seasons.  A Year with Frog and Toad tells the story of a friendship that endures, and celebrates the differences that make everyone unique and special."

The next stage play at The Summit Playhouse will be:

BYE BYE BIRDIE | A musical comedy

Lyrics by Lee Adams

“Put on a Happy Face! It's the 1960s, Army-bound rock star Conrad Birdie is the talk of the town, and All-American girl Kim MacAfee is chosen for a very public farewell kiss before his departure. Kids, parents, and show biz people hilariously collide as Sweet Apple, Ohio prepares for the big event. With two Broadway runs and a hit motion picture, this classic musical is a fun time for the whole family.”

Kaleidoscope Youth Theatre, a project of The Summit Playhouse, is an educational and community service providing quality drama for and by youth since 1993.
